Why did you choose to be a CPA and/or advisor?
While in high school and college, I worked with multiple small businesses and entrepreneurs in my hometown of West, Texas (a welding shop, gas stations and restaurants). These experiences helped forge my desire to advise businesses and help them solve their problems.
What energizes you about your job?
I love this career, because it provides an avenue to teach something new to clients and staff, while also learning something new from my clients and staff. Every. Single. Day.
Why are you passionate about serving this niche?
Atrophy. The basic understanding that businesses (much like your body) are slowly breaking down over time really puts into proper focus the need personally to change, adapt and learn in order to survive and thrive. The clients we serve are the fighters (the small mom-and-pop shop that grew faster than anyone expected), the innovators (who disrupt the marketplace with new ideas or processes) and the gamblers (who risk everything in an attempt to change the world and build communities). Working with the middle market companies we serve highlights the need in my own life to constantly evolve or risk atrophy.
Where are you from?
West, Texas. Home of the most resilient and hard-working people in Texas.
What's your favorite sport to follow?
Football and baseball.
Do you own any pets?
Yes, my wife and I adopted two cats from shelters after we moved to Houston.
Favorite color(s)
Blue
What kind of music do you like?
I enjoy Texas country or red dirt country as it is fusion of old style country music and rock. It thrives on independence, originality and songwriting that has long left what is being blessed by Nashville record execs. I also enjoy a wide range of artists and types of music. I love any live performance and have seen Metallica live six times. Pink Floyd's "I Wish You Were Hear" was and still is a nighttime lullaby for my 2-year-old.
What is your favorite book/author? Or What are you reading right now?
I read The Book Thief by Zusak once a year. The best finance book I've ever read is Poor Charlie's Almanack by Charles Munger. My favorite non-fiction writers are Michael Lewis and Stephen E. Ambrose. I'm currently in the middle of two books: The Better Angels of Our Nature by Pinker, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by Rowling (I have a goal to read all of the Harry Potter books by the end of the year and then reread them with my boys once they get old enough to enjoy the stories.).
What's your favorite vacation destination?
Estes Park, Colorado. Rocky Mountain National Park is the most beautiful place on Earth. We vacation there at least once a year.
Favorite movie?
The Shawshank Redemption
What is your most-prized possession?
My most-prized physical possession is my 69 Pontiac Firebird. It is fast, bright orange and probably the reason why my wife agreed to go on a first date with me 17 years ago.
What's something cool we don’t know about you?
I was once a really strong person. I placed 5th in the 220-pound weight class my senior year in high school. I currently started lifting weights again, and now I have a personal goal to bench press over 400 pounds by the end of 2018.
